Nieuwe Pokémon Snap vereist dat spelers door de Lental-regio reizen en gegevens verzamelen over soorten Pokémon uit alle 8 huidige Pokémon-regio's.
Verkenning in de Pokemon serie zal een ander pad inslaan voor degenen die spelen Nieuwe Pokémon Snap . In plaats van een groep Pokémon op te richten om tegen Gyms te vechten of rivalen uit te schakelen, Nieuwe Pokémon Snap zullen spelers de Lental-regio laten verkennen met niets meer dan een camera. De Lental-regio bestaat uit 12 gebieden, en elk heeft Pokémon-soorten die behoren tot de 8 huidige generaties van de belangrijkste Pokemon game serie. Terwijl het gooien van een Pokéball misschien niet tot de mogelijkheden behoort Nieuwe Pokémon Snap , zal het hopelijk net zo bevredigend zijn om de juiste momentopname te maken.
Spelers ruilen hun Pokédex voor een Photodex in de Lental-regio. Net als de Pokédex houdt het echter elke Pokémon-soort bij waar een speler een foto van kan maken in Nieuwe Pokémon Snap . Deze vermeldingen bevatten de basisgegevens van een Pokémon, inclusief lengte, gewicht en type. Het laat ook de foto's zien die van de soort zijn gemaakt en in welk gebied de Pokémon zich bevindt.
